{"id":38,"date":"2016-01-10T00:55:27","date_gmt":"2016-01-10T00:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crossett.net\/thecountrywife\/?p=38"},"modified":"2016-03-02T00:15:55","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T05:15:55","slug":"the-hiking-challenge-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crossett.net\/thecountrywife\/index.php\/2016\/01\/10\/the-hiking-challenge-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hiking Challenge 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a town near us there has been a hiking challenge the last two summers.\u00a0 For a $5.00 fee you can register, receive a booklet with 8 or 10 hiking trails listed, get a tee shirt advertising the challenge, and get off into the woods.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>In 2014 my husband did the hiking.\u00a0 Early in October there was an evening of celebration and possibility of winning prizes.\u00a0 He won a prize though I have forgotten what it was.<\/p>\n<p>Since I had been on a healthier living kick for a while (attending a \u201cHealthier Living for the Chronically Ill\u201d course during the winter and getting back into swimming, plus a couple months on a very low carbohydrate eating plan), I thought perhaps I would do the hiking challenge this year (2015).\u00a0 We both registered and started\u00a0 with an easy hike.\u00a0 To be considered a \u201cwinner\u201d in the challenge this summer, a hiker had to complete 5 of the 8 hikes in the booklet.<\/p>\n<p>We started out right away.\u00a0 I took my \u201cstroller\u201d over hill and dale and large boulders in the middle of the trail, picking it up to go over a log.\u00a0 I was completely bushed when we finished but finish we both did.<\/p>\n<p>My husband went on to do several more hikes before I got back into the woods.\u00a0 Eventually, with encouragement from him, I managed another hike by myself.\u00a0 We hiked together on three more hikes, with him insisting that I figure out the trail by myself (to teach me some woods skills).<\/p>\n<p>We did the final two trails together which were very difficult, at least for me, and nearly killed me.\u00a0 Well, it felt like I was near death&#8217;s door when I crawled up out of the gully&#8230;.\u00a0 When we finally came out of the woods we were on the main north-south highway between towns.\u00a0 He hiked another half mile along Route 10 to our car while I leaned against a guardrail watching the cars go by. And go by.
